“Two things only the people anxiously desire, bread and circuses.” – Juvenal
We saw the majestic glaciers off of the bow of the ship. My mother remarked on how much smaller and farther back they were than the last time she toured the area. A small, black iceberg floated by, I never knew that icebergs could be black. I stood with the group; we waited in anticipation, and then… a loud crack! I knew that there wasn’t a moment to lose. In my “all-American” competitive spirit I ran to the side of the ship, determined to not miss the shot. I watched as the huge chunk of ice began to crumble, but, suddenly, I couldn’t take the picture. Instead, I was overwhelmed with a sense of dread. At that moment I realized that for my entertainment, enjoyment and pleasure, and with a belly full of gourmet lunch; indeed, for my distraction; I was, at that very instance, witnessing the end of the world. These are the photos that I took instead.
These are expressions of my concerns for the world we inhabit. Included in this body of work are photographs of old and retreating glaciers, melting frozen worlds intended to be exhibited and juxtaposed with work from "Empty Nest and the Greenhouse Effect." We watch and eat, enjoying our bread and circuses as we try and escape the reality of our changing environment.
