(1)Maiden, (2)Mother, (3)Crone, (4)Triple Goddess: Three 14" in diameter and one 16" in diameter handmade shamanic drums created with deer hide, raw hide lacing, and ash hoop. Photo transfers, feathers, torn dress fabric, and dried curly willow branches.
You may not remember, but let me tell you this, someone in some future time will think of us. (Sappho, seventh century BCE)
The pulse of our mother’s blood was our first continuous experience as we quickened in the womb. Our physical being formed in response to the rhythms of her body. No other sensation is so basic. The beat of the priestesses’ drums articulated this process of creation. (When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm, Layne Redmond)
Above is a favorite quote by the Greek poet, Sappho. It speaks of time as a circular experience. It suggests time as something past while being present and predicting the future, and it connects “you” to a more universal “us.” In many ways it also exemplifies the metaphor of the Maiden, Mother, and Crone, or the Triple Goddess. They depict mythical archetypes represented as three individual women, or states of womanhood, that are forever linked.
Also above is a quote expressing a possible explanation as to why we feel and react so strongly to shamanic drumming. Such sound is perhaps the most primal for us and resonates with a deep, subconscious memory of hearing our mother's heartbeat.
In thinking of these things, I created these drums in honor of the Triple Goddess within each woman. My intent is to remind us of the feminine strength and power we hold, especially when we work collectively as a group. This is our drum circle.
